LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (March 17, 2006) -- Junior Ryan Halliburton (Dewey, Ariz.) and senior Jeff Potts (Kirkland, Wash.) hurled complete-game victories, and freshmen Alex Berta (Normal, Ill.) and Cory McCullick (Hudson, Ill.) combined for six hits and each scored a pair of runs to lead Edgewood College (8-4) past Keystone College (3-3) in a doubleheader Friday from Disney's Wide World of Sports. The Eagles won by scores of 10-3 and 3-2.
Halliburton threw game one and struck out six batters and allowed three earned runs. Edgewood scored four runs in both the bottom of the second and fourth innings. The Eagles held an 8-1 lead before Keystone’s Nelson Gomez jacked a two-run homer over the left field fence with nobody out in the sixth inning. Edgewood got the runs back, however, by adding a pair in the bottom half of the frame.
In game two, the Giants out-hit the Eagles 13-6. Edgewood struck first by plating a run in the top of the first and another in the top of the second. Later on with the score 2-1, Nick Wilz (Appleton, Wis.) led off the sixth inning with a double down the left field line. Ricky Martinez (Beach Park, Ill.) flied out to right field for the second out of the inning. Wilz tagged up and advanced to third base on the routine fly ball, but the Giants’ throw back into the infield skipped past both middle infielders, allowing Wilz to score a much-needed insurance run on the error.
Keystone cut the Eagle lead back down to one, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Luis Alvarez, but Potts got the Giants to leave two men stranded on the base paths. Michael Leedock singled with one out in the seventh to give Keystone the potential game-tying run on first base.
Pinch runner Mike Petroski was gunned down at second base on a fielder’s choice by Eagle third baseman Jesse Anderson (Rochester, Minn.) and Jonathon Papada was called out at first base on a ground ball that ricocheted off of Potts and picked up by second baseman Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) for the final out of the game.
Edgewood will conclude its spring trip on Saturday morning with a single game versus Spring Arbor University at 10 a.m. CST. Power right-hander Cody Flynn (Eureka, Calif.) is scheduled to make the start on the mound for the Eagles.
