DEMOREST, Ga. (March 10, 2006) – Piedmont College exploded for 18 hits off of five Edgewood College pitchers as the Lions cruised to a 14-4 victory from Laudermilk Field on Friday.
RBI doubles by Andrew Handorf (DeForest, Wis.) and Shawn Burcum (DeForest, Wis.) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But Piedmont retaliated in the bottom half of the frame scoring three runs on Eagles starting pitcher Jeff Potts (Kirkland, Wash.), who fell to 0-2 on the season.
A two-out, RBI single by Cole Spedale in the bottom of the fourth gave the Lions a 5-2 cushion. Edgewood got the run back in its next at bats, however, when a wild pitch allowed Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) to score from third base.
Piedmont went on to score 10 unanswered runs over the next three frames, which included 10 hits and two errors on the Eagle defense. Edgewood’s John Fish (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) hit a solo homerun, a 415-foot blast over the centerfield fence, to round out a day’s worth of scoring.
Edgewood collected 10 hits in the contest, led by Handorf’s 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Jesse Anderson (Rochester, Minn.) finished a perfect 2-for-2 and Cory McCullick (Hudson, Ill.) was 2-for-3. The Eagles left a total of six runners stranded on the base paths and had four runners picked off.
Ian McClary was the starting pitcher for Piedmont. McClary pitched 6.1 innings. He surrendered nine hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out five.
Edgewood will play next on Sunday, March 12 versus Pikeville (Ky.) College at Disney's Wide World of Sports near Orlando, Fla.
