Eagles fall short in non-conference thriller

Chris DeMarco

MADISON, Wis. (November 25, 2006) – Sophomore Chris DeMarco (Appleton, Wis.) scored a game-high 21 points and Charlie Averkamp (New Berlin, Wis.) added 16 points and 13 rebounds, but Lake Forest College escaped from the Todd Wehr Edgedome with a 62-61 victory Saturday afternoon.

A tip-in by Jesse Espe (Monroe, Wis.) with one minute, 52 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Eagles (1-2) their first lead, 59-58, since midway through the first half and a pair of DeMarco foul shots on the Eagles’ next possession extended the margin to three. Espe, who was making his third collegiate start, contributed 10 points in the losing effort.

But the Foresters (2-1) battled back to within one and a Brad Wehner jumper with 24 seconds left put Lake Forest ahead for good, as a pair of Eagle shots rimmed out in the final seconds. Wehner led four Foresters scoring in double figures with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. As a team, Lake Forest shot 48.9 percent for the game.

Meanwhile, the Eagles shot just 35.7 percent in the second half after trailing 28-25 at halftime. One area where Edgewood College did shoot well was from the free throw line where the Eagles went 20-of-23 (87.0 percent). DeMarco was 12-of-13 from the charity stripe to lead the Eagles in scoring for the third consecutive game to begin the 2006-07 campaign.

Edgewood College will be on the road for the first time this season when they travel to River Forest, Ill. this Wednesday, November 29 where they will face Northern Athletics Conference rival Dominican University. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tilt.
