MADISON, Wis. (October 25, 2006) -- One of the nation's top offenses was in full gear Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field. And the defense wasn't too bad, either. Edgewood College, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in scoring offense, pounded Alverno College 10-0 in the women's soccer team's regular season finale from Breese Stevens Field.
And what's a finale without fireworks? The Eagles (12-4, 9-2 NAC), who were averaging 4.64 goals per game coming into Wednesday's Northern Athletics Conference match, lit up the scoreboard by scoring early and often, including seven goals in the first half --a flamboyant "goodbye" on "Senior Night," which honored Brenda Bartolazzi (Pulaski, Wis.), Kristen Hofmeister, (Lincoln, Neb.), and Kelli Sullivan (Chippewa Falls, Wis.).
In addition to a dominating offensive attack, Edgewood College in the meantime displayed a strong defensive presence and did not allow an Inferno shot for the complete 90 minutes.
Helping her bid for NAC Rookie of the Year was Elyse Clouthier (Oconomowoc, Wis.) who found the back of the Inferno net three times, as did fellow freshman Larissa Nach (Monroe, Wis.). Molly Boberschmidt (Waukesha, Wis.) also had a multi-goal evening with two scores. Former Memorial High School teammates Kara Peppler (Madison, Wis.) and Tammi Hagensick (Madison, Wis.) completed the offensive effort with a score each.
Alverno goalkeeper Sheila Wischer managed 15 saves as Edgewood College rattled off 44 shots, 28 of which were on goal.
The win solidified Edgewood College as the No. 2 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, which starts Saturday, October 28, but the Eagles also receive a first round bye in the six-team field. Edgewood College will host the highest remaining seed after Saturday's first round on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Game time has not yet been determined.
