KENOSHA, Wis. (Jan. 3, 2006) -- The Edgewood College women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull out a 61-57 victory at Carthage College on Tuesday, marking the first time this season the Eagles have won a non-conference game on the road.
Carthage (5-6) jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first half, as the Eagles (5-8) went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal. The Lady Reds, who led by seven points at the break, went back up by 10 points, 33-23, at 18:03 in the second period before going on a dry spell of its own, with no baskets between 18:03 and 12:21.
Edgewood took advantage of the drought to take an 11-point lead, 46-35, at 7:31. Carthage came back with an 11-2 run to pull to within two points, 48-46, at 3:45 before the Eagles opened up a nine-point lead, 59-50, at 1:09 and went on to win by four.
Edgewood shot 53 percent, including an even 65 percent (13-of-20) in the second half, while Carthage shot just 38 percent (23-of-61). The two teams combined on 51 turnovers.
Megan Scheele (New Glarus, Wis.) topped the Eagles with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. She scored 18 of her points in the second half. Nickie Updike (Monticello, Wis.) pitched in 12 points.
Carlie Janowiak led the Lady Reds with 14 points and six assists, while Erika Buchholz added 13 points.
Edgewood will travel to Milwaukee on Friday, Jan. 6 for a Lake Michigan Conference game at Alverno College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
