Individual efforts not enough as Eagles fall at Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (January 31, 2006) -- Despite five players scoring in double figures, the Edgewood College men’s basketball had its five-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night, falling 82-78 at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The Eagles (11-10, 6-5 LMC) enjoyed a nine-point lead, 21-12, nearly eight minutes into the first half on a slam dunk by Jon Ciche (Franklin, Wis.), who finished the evening with his first collegiate double-double. The freshman tallied 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Edgewood had numerous opportunities to extend its lead to double digits, but eventually let Wisconsin Lutheran back into the game. The Warriors (8-14, 5-6 LMC) came back later in the first period to regain the advantage.

A jumper by Pat Krygiel capped off a 15-4 run by Wisconsin Lutheran and lifted the Warriors to a three-point lead with under four minutes left in the half. Edgewood’s Ryan Johnsen (Greendale, Wis.) retaliated with a three-point basket and Charlie Averkamp (New Berlin, Wis.) ended the first half with a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a 39-35 lead at halftime.

But the Warriors came out firing in the second half led by Lewis Jiles’ 14 points. The Warriors also drained six of the team’s nine three-pointers in the final period, as Edgewood quickly found itself playing catch-up. The Eagles also committed 19 turnovers, contrary to their positive efforts to get to the basket.

Coming off of the bench, Edgewood’s Chris DeMarco (Appleton, Wis.) poured in a game-high and career-best 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Seth Cooper* (Madison, Wis.) added 15 points and six assists. Averkamp flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high seven assists, and Eddie Hebl (Brookfield, Wis.) tallied 10 points.

Edgewood will host Concordia University this Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Tip-off will follow the women’s game versus the Falcons and is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
