BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (May 20, 2005) – Revenge is sweet, but even sweeter when it comes in the postseason. Edgewood College (28-16) came from behind Friday to defeat Ripon College (23-14) by a final score of 4-1 from Horenberger Field. The Eagles finally solved the mystery that is Redhawk left-handed pitcher Dan Williams, who hurled a complete-game shutout against Edgewood back on April 24, as John Fish’s (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the Eagles with the eventual game-winner and secured the program’s first-ever win in an NCAA Division III Regional.
Prior to Fish’s two-run blast over the left-field fence, Williams gave his Ripon squad the go-ahead run with an RBI double that broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Edgewood then took a 2-1 lead following the homer by Fish, who finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, and added insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.
Jeff Potts (Kirkland, Wash.) improved to 6-0 on the mound after holding the hot-hitting Redhawks to just four hits and one earned run. The southpaw also struck out four in going the distance.
Edgewood College will now face Washington University (32-9) in an elimination game set for Noon on Saturday, May 21. The Bears of Wash. U. knocked top-seeded Aurora University out of the six-team regional tournament with a 12-9 victory over the Spartans earlier in the day on Friday.
