ALMA, Mich. (May 13, 2005) -- The Edgewood College softball team defeated Allegheny College (21-17) by a final score of 5-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championships on Friday. In addition to breaking the program's single-season record for wins in a season, the Eagles (30-12) became the first team from Edgewood to win an NCAA tournament game and will take on Aurora University (38-4-1) later today.
Edgewood took a 1-0 lead early in the bottom of the first inning when Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) scored on a wild pitch. Nichole Johnson's (Waunakee, Wis.) RBI double in the bottom of the second gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Then with the bases loaded in the fourth, Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) drove in three runs with a double to right-center field.
Brittany Butcher (St. Charles, Ill.) started the game and pitched 5.1 innings before Amy Bahler (Monroe, Wis.) was brought in for relief. Butcher gave up four hits and struck out one, while Bahler surrendered two hits and an earned run to go along with three strikeouts.
