Softball splits with WLC following 16-inning marathon

MILWAUKEE – It took the Edgewood College softball team 16 innings to complete a 1-0 shutout of host Wisconsin Lutheran College in game one of a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader at Wilson Park on Saturday. The Eagles (8-10, 3-1 LMC) then picked up their first LMC loss of the season in game two, falling to the Warriors (3-14, 1-1 LMC) by a final score of 5-2.

With the score knotted at 0-0, Katie Hensgen’s (Waunakee, Wis.) RBI single in the top of the 16th inning drove in Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) for the eventual game-winning run, and Eagle pitcher Amy Bahler (Monroe, Wis.) held on for the victory after retiring the Warriors in order in the bottom half of the frame.

Bahler pitched the final five innings after Brittany Butcher (St. Charles, Ill.) went the first 11 innings. The two hurlers combined for the shutout after surrendering a total of seven hits with 12 strikeouts, nine by Butcher, and no walks.

Six different Eagles collected two hits, as Edgewood had a total of 61 plate appearances in the contest.

Game two looked much like the first with a scoreless tie through the first six frames. Wisconsin Lutheran then exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Edgewood retaliated with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh, but the rally came up short.

Jessica Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) batted 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with an RBI. Carrie Clum (Pomona, Colo.) drove in the Eagles’ other run.

Bahler was charged with the loss. She pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and six hits, while striking out five. Butcher pitched the last two outs, but not before surrendering two earned runs, two walks, and a pair of hits.

Edgewood will be back in action this Monday, April 11 with a non-conference doubleheader at North Park University. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
