Baseball swept by Ripon College in non-conference doubleheader

RIPON, Wis. (April 24, 2005) – Lack of offense was the downfall for the Edgewood College baseball team in a non-conference doubleheader at Ripon College (14-11) on Sunday. The Eagles (22-12) managed just six hits on the day as they fell to the Red Hawks by scores of 8-1 and 8-0.

Ripon built an 8-0 lead in game one before the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI double by Ricky Martinez (Beach Park, Ill.). Red Hawk starting pitcher Nick Collins allowed just three hits in the complete game victory.

Ryan Duntemann (Arlington Heights, Ill.) picked up the loss for the Eagles after hurling four innings. Duntemann gave up five earned runs on four hits before being relieved by Ryan Halliburton (Dewey, Ariz.), who pitched the final four frames. Halliburton surrendered four hits and two earned runs while striking out four.

Edgewood was also held to just three hits in the nightcap as Ripon starter Dan Williams threw a complete game shutout. Two of the Eagles’ base knocks came off the bat of Shawn Burcum (DeForest, Wis.), who finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Ripon scored seven of its eight runs in the last three innings off of three different Edgewood pitchers. Eagle starting pitcher Tom Caillouette lasted five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

The Eagles will have some time now to recover before their big three-game series with Lake Michigan Conference rival Marian College. Edgewood will travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. this Friday, April 29 for a single game against the Sabres with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Edgewood will then host Marian in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 at Stampfl Field in Verona beginning at 5 p.m.

This weekend’s series will have major LMC implications as the Eagles are currently first place in the league standings with a 14-1 mark. Marian will come into the series with a 9-2 record in the LMC.
