The defense rests as UW-Platteville downs Eagle baseball

VERONA, Wis. (April 20, 2005) --  The Edgewood College baseball team dropped its third straight non-conference game on Wednesday, as the UW-Platteville Pioneers (13-15) took advantage of four Eagle errors on their way to a 10-6 victory at Stampfl Field on Wednesday.

The Pioneers got things going in the fourth inning as they tacked on five runs, four of which were unearned, to take a 6-0 lead. Edgewood got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth as Tony Bunkleman (Hortonville, Wis.) and Marcus Elfering (Bristol, Wis.) each had RBI doubles to cut the deficit 6-3.

The two teams would then exchange three runs a piece in the fifth inning as Matt Huckstep singled in two RBI for the Pioneers in the top half of the inning.  Bunkleman doubled to left in the bottom half of the inning as the Eagles kept within striking distance at 9-6.

However, that would be all the Eagles would score for the rest of the afternoon as Pioneer starting pitcher Ryan Slaught went seven innings, giving up nine hits, six earned runs, striking out five, and walking only one to pick up the win. Bryan Aspenson pitched the final two innings for UW-Platteville unscathed, striking out four, including the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Eagles starting pitcher Andrew Handorf (Deforest, Wis.) took the loss to fall to 4-2 on the year. Handorf went six-plus innings, giving up eight hits, 10 runs, (five earned) while striking out and walking five.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 21 at Milwaukee School of Engineering. The first pitch is scheduled at 3 p.m. The Eagles' next home doubleheader will be this Saturday, April 23 againt MSOE. Saturday will also mark Mizuno Little League Day out at Stampfl Field with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 p.m.
