FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 20, 2005) – The Edgewood College softball team extended its win streak to 12 games and garnered its second consecutive 20-win season on Wednesday as the Eagles (20-10) swept a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Dominican University (7-22) with a pair of 2-1 victories from McGaw Park.
Edgewood, which is now 8-2 in one-run contests this season, came from behind in game one. Dominican scored first in the top of the third inning on a single by Cristina Donofrio that got past Nichole Johnson (Waunakee, Wis.) in centerfield to score Sheila Krahl from all the way from first base.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Stars until the bottom of the sixth inning when Edgewood tallied two runs. A sacrifice bunt by Katie Hensgen (Waunakee, Wis.) allowed the Eagles to plate the tying run, and an RBI single by Brittany Butcher (St. Charles, Wis.) proved to be the game winner.
Butcher also pitched her 10th complete game of 2005 and improved to 11-4 in the pitcher’s circle. She gave up just two hits in seven innings and an unearned run while striking out nine and walking one. At the plate, the Eagles were led by freshman Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.), who went 2-for3.
Edgewood took the initiative in the nightcap, getting on the scoreboard first in inning number two. Hensgen led off the frame with a double to left field. She would later score on an error to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Dominican evened the score in its next at-bat, scoring the tying run on a two-out throwing error. But Edgewood responded quickly by scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third on Johnson’s RBI single.
Starting pitcher Amy Bahler (Monroe, Wis.) went five complete innings for the Eagles. Bahler surrendered five hits and an unearned run. She struck out two and walked two. Jessica Courchaine (Marathon, Wis.) earned her first collegiate save after hurling the final two innings. Courchaine allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow, April 21, when the Eagles travel to UW-Platteville for a non-conference doubleheader versus the Pioneers. The first game of Thursday’s twinbill is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
