FITCHBURG, Wis. (April 13, 2005) – Edgewood College took a pair of one-run softball games from Alverno College on Wednesday. Jessica Stephens’ (St. Charles, Ill.) RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Eagles (12-10, 5-1 LMC) a 3-2 victory in game one. Edgewood then defeated the Inferno (7-13, 1-3 LMC) by a final score of 5-4 in the nightcap from McGaw Park.
Edgewood jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning on a fielder’s choice and again in bottom of the third. Alverno got a run back in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles and tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI single.
Stephens went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Her sister Jennifer Stephens (St. Charles, Ill.) batted 2-for-5 with a run scored. Edgewood starting pitcher Brittany Butcher (St. Charles, Ill.) went the distance. In 11 innings Butcher allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out 14.
With the score knotted at 4-4 through the first six innings of game two, Edgewood scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on Nichole Johnson’s (Waunakee, Wis.) two-out single to right field that was mishandled allowing Jennifer Stephens to score from second base.
Jessica Courchaine (Marathon, Wis.) started in the pitcher’s circle for the Eagles, but lasted just an inning and a third. Despite struggling with her control, Courchaine allowed two runs, both unearned. Courchaine was relieved by Kristen Borre (Beloit, Wis.), who earned the win. Borre pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering just two hits and two earned runs. Butcher pitched a flawless seventh inning to pick up her first save of the season.
Jennifer Stephens again led the Eagles in hitting, going 3-for-4 in game two with three runs scored and an RBI. Johnson was 3-for-4 and Jennifer Ley (Mineral Point, Wis.) went 1-for-3 with three RBI batting in the cleanup spot.
Edgewood will host Milwaukee School of Engineering this Saturday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McGaw Park in Fitchburg.
