VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team, ranked No. 8 in this week’s Midwest regional poll, defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College (2-11, 0-1 LMC) on Friday, 6-2, in the Eagles (9-6, 1-0 LMC) home opener from Stampfl Field. The game was also the Lake Michigan Conference opener for both teams.
Edgewood survived six defensive errors and came back from a 2-0 deficit. The Eagles chipped away at Wisconsin Lutheran’s early lead by scoring a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Nick Wilz (Appleton, Wis.) garnered Edgewood’s first hit of the day by leading off the frame with a single to right field. Wilz later scored on an RBI single by John Fish (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.).
A double by Jon Adair (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) in the bottom of the fifth drove in the tying run. Adair then plated the eventual game-winning run by scoring on a fielder’s choice to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Eagles.
Edgewood added three more insurance runs in the sixth inning to help starting pitcher Andrew Handorf (DeForest, Wis.) improve to 3-1 on the mound. Handorf hurled 8.1 innings, surrendering seven hits. He struck out five and walked five.
Wisconsin Lutheran will play host to the Eagles in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 in Milwaukee. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
