CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Senior pitcher Dave Scheidell (Milton, Wis.) improved to 2-0 on the mound as the Edgewood College baseball team narrowly defeated Babson College on Tuesday, 4-3, from the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex.
Scheidell, a 5-foot-10 southpaw, went eight complete innings for the Eagles (7-4). He struck out eight, walked four, and allowed two earned runs. Scott Stievo (Flagstaff, Ariz.) relieved Scheidell in the top of the ninth inning to earn his second save.
Edgewood took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jon Adair (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) led off the frame with a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice, and Shawn Burcum (DeForest, Wis.) plated another run on an RBI single by Derek Jew (Homewood, Ill.). Jew, who led the Eagles at the plate by going 2-for-3, scored the third run of the game on a failed pick off attempt at third base in the fourth inning to make the score 3-0.
Babson got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Nick Wilz (Appleton, Wis.) to take a 4-1 lead. The Beavers (0-5) added a run in the sixth and another in the ninth, but the late rally came up just short.
Later in the day, the Eagle junior varsity team defeated Babson 20-9. Varsity will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 23 with a doubleheader versus Williams College beginning at 11:30 a.m. CST. Both games will be played at the New York Yankees spring training complex in Clearwater, Fla.
