Eagle baseball splits twinbill with Millikin University

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Edgewood College baseball team split a doubleheader with Millikin University on Monday, falling to the Big Blue by a final score of 6-3 in game one before prevailing 5-4 in extra innings from Jack Russell Stadium.

In game one, both Edgewood (6-4) and Millikin (5-4) produced nine hits each. However, the Big Blue scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to help put the game away. Eagle starting pitcher Ryan Duntemann (Arlington Height, Ill.) picked up the loss. The 6-foot-4 lefty pitched just over four innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs.

Jon Adair (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) went 2-for-4 at the plate and Nick Wilz (Appleton, Wis.) was 2-for-3 to lead Edgewood offensively.

In game two, Millikin took a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but Edgewood bounced back and scored a pair of runs to make the score 4-3 in the bottom half of the frame. The Eagles tied the score at 4-4 in their next at-bat and the score remained knotted through the end of seven innings.

Edgewood pitchers Scott Stievo (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Mitch Staley (Brooklyn, Wis.) then combined for a scoreless top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth with one out and runners on second and third base, Ben Greiber (Waunakee, Wis.) laid down a perfect drag bunt to score Karl Reynolds (Dodgeville, Wis.) for the winning run.

Bill Dictus (Combined Locks, Wis.) started the game on the mound for Edgewood. Dictus went seven innings, surrendering seven hits and four earned runs. Eagle pitching left nine Big Blue runners stranded on the base paths, as Millikin out-hit Edgewood 14-9. The victory was credited to Stievo, while Al Brisack, who is in his sixth season at Edgewood, earned his 100th win as head coach of the Eagles.

The Eagles will have an early game on Tuesday, Mar. 22 against Babson College. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. CST at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
