Concordia spoils "Senior Night" with 74-61 win over the Eagles

MADISON, Wis. – Concordia University (10-13, 7-3 LMC) shot a scorching 53.8 percent from the field Wednesday to defeat Edgewood College (14-9, 8-3 LMC) in Lake Michigan Conference men’s basketball action from the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

On the other end of the court, the Eagles struggled offensively by shooting 39.7 percent from the field on “Senior Night.” The Falcons held Edgewood scoreless the final six minutes of the first half, while closing out the period on a 11-0 run to take a 36-25 lead at halftime.

Edgewood was able to cut the Falcons’ lead down to five, 62-57, on a three-point basket by senior Dave Michalkiewicz (Menasha, Wis.) with 2:55 remaining. But the Falcons, who were 12-of-17 from the free throw line in the second half, were able to knock down their foul shots at the end.

Concordia’s zone defense left plenty of opportunities for the Eagles to hit long-range jumpers. However, Edgewood responded by shooting just 3-of-14 from beyond the arc in the final period. Seth Cooper* (Madison, Wis.) scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. Cooper also tallied a team-best nine rebounds and four assists.

Michalkiewicz ended up with 10 points, followed by Charlie Averkamp (New Berlin, Wis.) and Greg Blaska (DeForest, Wis.), who each added nine points. Blaska also tied a personal season-high with three blocked shots.

Josh Atkinson netted 18 points to lead Concordia prior to fouling out of the contest with 3:28 left to play. Matt Peets finished with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Steve Huenink provided 13 points off of the bench. The Falcons turned the ball over just seven times, compared to 12 miscues by Edgewood.

Edgewood still controls a half game lead in the LMC standings. The Eagles will clinch at least a share of their eighth conference title under head coach Steve Larson if they can win their regular-season finale at Wisconsin Lutheran College (11-12, 7-3 LMC) on Monday, Feb. 14. Tip-off versus the Warriors is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The REX in Milwaukee.
