GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (Nov. 9, 2005) -- Calvin College shutout Edgewood College on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships by a final score of 4-0 from Marvin Zuidema Field. The Eagles (12-9) are now eliminated from the postseason, while Calvin (16-4-1) will advance to play Ohio Wesleyan University (20-0) on Saturday, Nov. 12.
"I thought for the first 15 to 20 minutes it was a pretty even game," said Edgewood College head coach Tim Alexander, who has led the Eagles to three NCAA appearances in his 16 years with the program. "Even though the winds were gusting, I thought that could have played to [Calvin's] advantage a bit in the first half, but they have a good team. We may have gotten down a little bit after we let up the first goal."
Nick Capisciolto's header from Kurt Visker at the 37:13 mark gave the Knights the early advantage. However, the Eagles defense led by goalkeeper Ryan Flohr (Fond du Lac, Wis.) was able to keep it a close contest, 1-0, 1-0 at the half. Calvin extended their lead with just over six minutes into the second half when Jared Litty capitalized on a touch pass from teammate Levi Kool.
Head official Jaime Pilbeam then made a decision that all but helped the Knights close the deal when he red-carded Edgewood's Shaun Glynn (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) for an aggressive defensive play on a Calvin attacker. Glynn was forced to leave the contest at 52:49, which left the Eagles short one player on the field. The Knights went on to add a pair of goals from Matt Cosnek and Litty, respectively.
"When they've got 11 players to your 10 against, especially when playing a team that's on their game, it makes it a little hard to come back," said Alexander. "But I guess it's what the referee sees and what he calls -- I personally thought that it could have been a yellow card against Shaun."
Calvin registered 29 shots compared to just six shots by the Eagles. Flohr tallied nine saves in goal for Edgewood.
