York College downs Edgewood men in Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Championship

Seth Cooper

YORK, Penn. – York College (11-1), host of this weekend's Fifth Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, defeated Edgewood College (9-5) in the championship game, 80-77, on Saturday, despite a season-high 32 points from the Eagles' Seth Cooper* (Madison, Wis.).

Cooper shot 11-of-17 from the floor, including three baskets from beyond arc, and was again perfect from the free throw line, going 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Cooper has made his last 29 free throw attempts, a streak that dates back to the Dec. 29 game versus Eureka College. His 60 points in two games was also a new tournament record.

Senior David Michalkiewicz* (Menasha, Wis.) put together arguably his best performance of the season. Michalkiewicz dished out five assists and had three steals, while registering a season-high 22 points with five three-point baskets. As a team, the Eagles knocked down a season-best 10 three pointers in the loss.

Once again, Edgewood had to come back from an early deficit.  The Spartans held a 17-point advantage, their largest lead of the game, midway into the first half and took a 41-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. York led by double digits most of the second half, but a three pointer by Michalkiewicz finally brought the Eagles within nine, 65-56, at the 8:53 mark.

A pair of free throws by Kyle Scott (Burlington, Wis.) tied the score at 72-72 with 3:02 remaining. However, the Eagles went cold from the floor and missed their next four field goal attempts, as they saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday. Scott finished with 10 points.

York was led by Kenny Fass and Chad McGowan, who each scored a career-high 20 points. Brandon Bushey added 14 points for the Spartans.

Edgewood College will get back into conference action on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Marian College. The Eagles are currently 3-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference, while Marian will enter Tuesday’s contest with an even 1-1 record in the league (3-10 overall). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison.
