MILWAUKEE – For the second straight game the Edgewood College men’s basketball team went into overtime, but tonight the Eagles came out on the losing end falling to Milwaukee School of Engineering 64-58 from the Kern Center.
Following 13 lead changes and seven ties in the second half, the Raiders (7-11, 2-5 LMC) held Edgewood (11-8, 5-2 LMC) scoreless for the final two minutes of overtime, outscoring the Eagles 11-5 in the extra period. MSOE’s Jeff Mikos led the Raiders with a triple-double. Mikos scored 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Mikos also had six of his team’s 10 steals.
With the Raiders down by a pair, Scott Murphy’s layup with 14 seconds remaining in regulation knotted the score at 53-53. Seth Cooper* (Madison, Wis.) had a chance to win the game, but his jumper with three seconds left did not fall. The Eagles missed their last six field goal attempts of the second half in addition to their last three foul shots.
It was an off night for Cooper, the Eagle’s leading scorer, despite his team-high 15 points -- Cooper shot just 5-of-19 from the field, while Edgewood shot 32.8 percent as a team. MSOE also struggled from the field, shooting at a 39.7 clip.
Edgewood seniors Greg Blaska (DeForest, Wis.) and David Michalkiewicz* (Menasha, Wis.) chipped in with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Charlie Averkamp (New Berlin, Wis.) had 10 points. Blaska and Averkamp, two of the top rebounders in the LMC, each tallied nine boards.
Robert Verdun led MSOE with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from the three-point range. Murphy had 12 points and eight rebounds. Doug Federwitz added 10 points to lead an MSOE bench that outscored Edgewood’s 17-1.
This Saturday, Jan. 29, the Eagles will host Maranatha Baptist Bible College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome in Madison. Edgewood defeated the Crusaders on the road earlier this season 99-77. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
