Edgewood College men’s soccer ousted in first round of NCAA Tourney

The 2004 Edgewood College men's soccer team finished the 2004 season with an overall record of 11-8-3 and a trip to the NCAA Div. III tournament

Whitewater, Wis. – Edgewood College (11-8-3) was eliminated from the 2004 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday following a 2-1 loss at UW-Whitewater (13-7-0). The Warhawks will now face Gustavus Adolphus College (17-1-2) in the second round of the national tournament on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Saint Peter, Minn.

The Eagles, who had not been to the NCAA tournament since their first trip in 1999, matched up well with UW-Whitewater as both teams’ offenses were held scoreless in the first half of play. The Warhawks’ Nate Haas gave his team a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 47:19.

Edgewood College tied the score at 1-1 when Kevin Winter’s (Green Bay, Wis.) header dropped in front of the net and the ball escorted into the goal by Mark Losby (Mount Horeb, Wis.) at 54:01. However, Haas struck again when a UW-Whitewater corner kick was deflected in front of the goal and Haas found himself in position to strike for the eventual game-winner at the 70:21 mark.

Losby registered another hard shot on goal for a potential tie at 86:30, but Edgewood College just couldn’t put enough pressure on the Warhawk defense in the closing minutes to force overtime.
